Fall 2015 - Closer to Death: Building Relationship After Death Through Ritual
In a culture that tells us that the death of a loved one should be "gotten over," grief can be a lonely, confusing, and isolating process. Popular assumptions about the grief process often make it difficult for people to integrate these losses into their daily lives. In reality, working with death requires the time and space to allow new meaning and new relationship to form around the loss and the departed individual.
In this workshop, we will discuss and practice building a new relationship with those in our lives who have passed on. Rather than trying to "move past" the death, we work to integrate the death into a new worldview, and create a new type of relationship with those in our lives who have died through the creation and experience of ritual.

Fall 2015 - Counseling the Non-Monogamous:
Polyamory & Swinging in Individual & Relationship Counseling
Making relationships work is a challenge, and sometimes people need a little extra support in their quest for healthy connection from mental health professionals. However, it can be difficult for counselors to know what to do when working with clients who practice polyamory, swinging, or other types of consensual non-monogamy in their relationships.
This workshop is a place where helping professionals can open up about their uncertainties, concerns, and questions regarding work with these relationships styles. It will include an overview of the various types of consensual non-monogamy, the difference between consensual non-monogamy and "cheating," and therapeutic considerations for work with these populations.

How Horses Heal Us: Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Workshop
Sometimes, people have a hard time opening up and trusting others, particularly if they find it difficult to be honest with themselves about their fears, hopes, and needs. Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy gives clients a chance to learn how to relate to others without the specific anxieties and fears that can sometimes accompany traditional therapeutic work. Working with horses requires trust, firmness, and gentleness. It requires confronting one's fears, taking risks, and learning to work together with another being. This makes it an excellent tool for working with these clients.
This workshop will introduce the principals of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy with hands-on experience. Participants will have the opportunity to work with horses in order to both confront their own hesitancy and also feel the incredible potential available in this type of work. The workshop will also include information about the current research in this field, as well as suggestions for including Equine work with different populations.

Sometimes we try to avoid grief, thinking it will pull us into an abyss we’ll never escape. Yet by choosing to meet with grief, what we actually discover is empowerment, beauty, and even joy.
Whether you are grieving a personal loss or experiencing sorrow for the world and the planet, your grief can be a portal to transformation. In this workshop we’ll explore grief through sharing our stories, art-making, and the creation of a grief altar. We’ll also spend time in a natural place, where nature’s wounds mirror our own and open us to emotions, healing, and resilience.
Details:
Trebbe Johnson is the founder of Radical Joy for Hard Times, a global community devoted to finding and making beauty in wounded places. She is the author of The World Is a Waiting Lover and numerous articles on the relationship between people and places.
Christi Strickland, MA is an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University, where one of her courses is Counseling Grief, Loss, and Life Transitions. She has served as Assistant Director of a wilderness program for adjudicated youth and is also trained as a grief counselor.
